GREENVILLE, S.C. — On Friday evening, the Texas women’s basketball team begins its hunt for another trophy as it makes its debut in the Southeastern Conference Tournament with a quarterfinal quarrel against Ole Miss.
As the SEC’s co-champion in the regular season and the No. 2 seed in this bracket, Texas (29-2) earned a double-bye for this five-day tournament at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Meanwhile, seventh-seeded Ole Miss (20-9) opened its tournament run with Thursday’s 85-73 beating of rival Mississippi State.
This will be UT’s first-ever appearance in the SEC Tournament. Historically, Texas has had mixed results when it comes to its first tries at winning a conference’s postseason competition. In 1983, Texas rolled past Rice, Houston and Arkansas for a successful debut at the Southwest Conference Tournament. The Longhorns were eliminated in the semifinals of the inaugural Big 12 Tournament in 1997.

SEC Tournament’s bracket full of NCAA hopefuls
If Texas is going to win the SEC Tournament, it won’t be easy. In its most recent bracketology projections, ESPN put 10 SEC teams in the NCAA field. With 13, the Big Ten is the only conference that boasts more expected bids.
Texas is currently projected by ESPN to be the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Ole Miss is seen as a No. 4 seed.
“The thing is that you have to understand is it’s single elimination. You can’t pick one of them nights to have an off night. If you do, you’re not going to win,” Texas coach Vic Schaefer said on Tuesday. “And so that’s where we’re at, we’ll be playing really good teams. Friday night, we’re going to play an NCAA Tournament team. Whoever it is, they’re in the NCAA Tournament.”
SEC once again honors Ole Miss’ Madison Scott
When the SEC released its awards for the 2024-25 season earlier this week, Ole Miss versatile senior Madison Scott earned second-team honors while guard Sira Thienou played her way onto the all-freshman team. This marks the third straight year that Scott has received all-conference accolades.
Against Mississippi State on Thursday, Scott scored 20 points while Thienou added 13. Senior guard Kennedy Todd-Williams also scored 20 points for the Rebels.
Texas vs. Ole Miss prediction
Texas. The Longhorns had to overcome an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter of its last meeting with Ole Miss. But this rematch is on a neutral court and Texas is well-rested, so expect the Longhorns to move onto the semifinals without as much drama.
