Chelsea FC took a significant step toward securing a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League final with a commanding 4-1 win over Swedish side Djurgården in the first leg of their semi-final clash in Stockholm on May 1, 2025. The Blues’ dominance was highlighted by a brace from substitute Nicolas Jackson, solidifying their position ahead of the return leg at Stamford Bridge.

Early Advantage Sets the Tone

Despite the challenges posed by an artificial pitch and a fervent home crowd, Chelsea asserted their superiority early in the match. In the 12th minute, Jadon Sancho capitalized on a precise cross from Enzo Fernández, with his shot deflecting off defender Marcus Danielsson to give Chelsea the lead .

As the first half progressed, Chelsea continued to press. Just before halftime, Noni Madueke doubled the advantage, finishing a well-orchestrated move initiated by Fernández, who notched his second assist of the evening .

Jackson’s Impactful Entrance

Manager Enzo Maresca made strategic substitutions at halftime, introducing Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer, Moisés Caicedo, and Trevoh Chalobah. Jackson’s impact was immediate; in the 59th minute, he exploited a defensive lapse to score Chelsea’s third goal. Six minutes later, he showcased his finishing prowess by firing into the roof of the net, extending the lead to 4-0 .

Reflecting on his performance, Jackson stated, “Very good performance, the most important thing is that we won. It is one step forward, and we hope to reach the final… we won the game and the manager is happy and we are happy” .

Djurgården’s Consolation and Chelsea’s Control

Despite being outplayed, Djurgården managed to salvage a goal in the 68th minute. Eighteen-year-old substitute Isak Alemayehu Mulugeta headed in a cross from Tobias Gulliksen, giving the home fans a moment to cheer .

Chelsea maintained control for the remainder of the match, with 16-year-old academy debutant Reggie Walsh nearly adding a fifth goal, only to be denied by goalkeeper Jacob Rinne .

What’s Next

With a three-goal advantage, Chelsea are well-positioned to advance to the final, scheduled for May 28 in Wrocław, Poland. They will face either Real Betis or Fiorentina, with Betis holding a 2-1 lead from their first-leg encounter .

Manager Enzo Maresca emphasized the importance of focus, stating, “We have one foot in the final, but we must remain vigilant and complete the job at home” .

The second leg at Stamford Bridge on May 8 will determine Chelsea’s fate, but with their current form and depth, the Blues are strong contenders to reach their first European final since 2021.
