Ederson leaves Man City for Fenerbahce after eight trophy laden years

Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson has officially closed the chapter on an extraordinary eight-year journey at Manchester City and is now heading to Fenerbahce in Turkey. His departure marks the end of one of the most decorated eras for a goalkeeper in Premier League history as he swaps the Etihad Stadium for Istanbul.

From the moment he arrived from Benfica in 2017, Ederson became the backbone of Pep Guardiola’s setup. Over 372 appearances he helped steer City to a staggering 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, their first ever Champions League, plus domestic cups and global honours like the Super Cup and Club World Cup. His calmness with the ball, distribution, and sweeping command of his area revolutionised the goalkeeper role in England.

His stats are impressive: 122 Premier League clean sheets in just 276 league matches, and a three-time winner of the Golden Glove award—only some of which underlines how much he meant to City’s dominance. City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, summed it up well: Ederson has “truly cemented his place in the history of Manchester City,” and he’ll always be welcome at the club.

Ederson himself expressed gratitude and emotion in his farewell, crediting manager Pep Guardiola, the fans, teammates, and the city: “I arrive in Manchester eight years ago full of hope but could not have predicted such a beautiful time together … Playing for City has been the most special time of my life and I will always be a fan … Once a Blue always a Blue.”

The move comes with a reported fee of around £12 million (€14 million), and Welcomed by Fenerbahce, he is set to earn a net salary of €11 million per season. The contract length wasn’t disclosed.

City had been prepared for life without Ederson. Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has already been lined up as his replacement following a deal worth around £26-£30 million from Paris Saint-Germain. Donnarumma is expected to sign a five-year deal and bring leadership and top-tier shot-stopping to the squad—albeit with a different style than Ederson’s distribution-oriented game.

In the meantime, City has also re-signed young goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley, who started City’s first few league games—but Donnarumma will likely assume the number one role moving forward.

This transfer reshuffle signals more than just a change between the posts. It feels symbolic: the end of a trophy-laden era, and a strategic pivot toward fresh hands in goal as City looks to maintain its dominance in English and European football.
