Luca Zinedine Zidane, the son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, has officially been called up to the Algerian national team following a change of international allegiance.
From France Youth to Algeria Senior
Luca, aged 27, had previously represented France at multiple youth levels — including Under-20 — but he had never made a senior appearance for Les Bleus.
Thanks to his family roots (his paternal grandparents are from the Kabylie region of Algeria), he was eligible to make the switch. FIFA approved his request via its Change of Association platform, granting him the right to represent Algeria.
Club and Career Background
Luca plays as a goalkeeper and is currently at Granada in Spain’s second division. His professional journey includes time in the Real Madrid academy, as well as spells at Rayo Vallecano and Eibar.
Although he has had opportunities at club level, his international career stalled with France once he passed the youth stage. The switch gives him a fresh opportunity at senior international football.
What This Means for Algeria
Algeria are in strong form in their World Cup qualifying group (Group G), and they now have two remaining matches against Somalia on October 9 and Uganda on October 14, 2025. A win in either could secure their place at the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Luca Zidane’s call-up adds another option in goal for Algeria. The national team has used several goalkeepers over the past year and has been seeking consistency in that position. Zidane
A Personal and Symbolic Shift
This switch is more than just a sporting decision. For Luca, representing the land of his ancestors carries personal significance, aligning his identity partly with his heritage. For fans, it adds a narrative layer — the son of a global icon, stepping into the international stage with a country that corresponds to part of his lineage.
