Team Italy defeats Brazil

Team Italy made a powerful statement in the World Baseball Classic 2026, producing a dominant performance to defeat Brazil 8-0 in their Pool B opener at Daikin Park in Houston.

The Italy vs Brazil clash saw an outstanding pitching display from Italian starter Sam Aldegheri, while young star Dante Nori delivered the offensive fireworks with two home runs to seal a convincing victory.

The result gave the Italians a strong start to the tournament and fulfilled manager Francisco Cervelli’s pre-tournament ambition of putting Italian baseball firmly on the global map.

Sam Aldegheri Leads Italy’s Dominant Pitching Display

The foundation of Italy’s victory in the matchup was laid by left-handed pitcher Sam Aldegheri, who produced one of the most impressive pitching performances of the early tournament.

Making his first appearance in the World Baseball Classic, the 24-year-old delivered 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight Brazilian hitters.

Aldegheri’s outing was significant not only for the result but also for the historic context surrounding his career. Born in Verona, Italy, the young pitcher became the first Italian-born pitcher to reach Major League Baseball in nearly 80 years when he debuted in 2024.

That milestone came decades after Rugger Ardizoia, who pitched for the New York Yankees in 1947.

Currently ranked as the Los Angeles Angels’ No. 17 prospect, Aldegheri showed exactly why Cervelli’s entrusted him with the opening assignment in such an important game.

Italy Breaks Through After Early Pitching Duel

For much of the contest, the encounter remained a tight pitching battle.

Brazilian starter Enzo Sawayama held Italy scoreless during the early innings and kept the game within reach for his team.

However, the Italians finally broke the deadlock in the sixth inning.

Houston Astros outfielder Zach Dezenzo, playing in his home stadium, opened the scoring with a crucial RBI single that gave Italy its first run of the game.

Moments later, Kansas City Royals slugger Jac Caglianone added another run with a powerful double down the right-field line that slipped past Brazil first baseman Dante Bichette Jr.

Those two runs shifted momentum decisively in Italy’s favor.

Dante Nori Headlines Late Offensive Explosion

While Italy gradually built control of the game, the decisive moment in the matchup arrived late thanks to the brilliance of Dante Nori.

The 21-year-old delivered two home runs, powering Italy’s offense and putting the game beyond Brazil’s reach.

With the performance, Nori became the second-youngest player in World Baseball Classic history to record a multi-home run game at just 21 years and 151 days old.

Interestingly, the record-setting moment came only a day after Brazil’s Lucas Ramirez achieved the same feat against the United States.

Italy added further damage when Dominic Canzone blasted a three-run home run deep into the second deck in right field, completing the eight-run outburst and sealing the shutout win.

Brazil Still Searching for First WBC Victory

The defeat leaves Brazil in a difficult position in Pool B of the World Baseball Classic 2026.

After losing to the United States in their tournament opener, the heavy loss to their rivals drops Brazil to 0-2 in the standings.

Brazil is still chasing its first-ever victory in the World Baseball Classic, having previously debuted in the tournament in 2013.

Despite flashes of promise from several players, the team struggled to keep pace with Italy’s pitching and late offensive surge.

Italy Joins Tournament Favorites With Opening Win

For Italy, the commanding victory in the game puts them in a strong early position in Pool B.

The Italians now join Team USA and Mexico, who also won their opening games in the group.

Upcoming matchups against those two tournament favorites will likely determine whether Cervelli’s team can advance to the knockout stages.

However, if the performance against Brazil is any indication, Team Italy could become one of the surprise contenders in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
