Arsenal sent an emphatic message ahead of the new Premier League season after producing a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester City to win the 2026 Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

The Premier League champions were ahead inside the opening minute and never surrendered control, with Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard all finding the net in a performance that underlined Arsenal’s confidence heading into the new campaign.

Summer signing Christos Tzolis was the creative star of the afternoon, providing two assists as Mikel Arteta’s side claimed their 18th Community Shield title, leaving them behind only Manchester United in the competition’s all-time standings.

For Manchester City, however, the opening competitive game of the post-Pep Guardiola era ended in a sobering defeat as Enzo Maresca’s side struggled to match Arsenal’s intensity and physicality.

Arsenal strike early in Community Shield showdown

The Community Shield final was barely underway when Arsenal found the breakthrough. Just 23 seconds into the contest, Myles Lewis-Skelly created the opening for Calafiori, slipping the ball through for the Italian defender, who finished calmly beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.

It was the perfect start for Arsenal and immediately placed Manchester City under pressure. The Gunners played with greater energy and aggression, while City struggled to establish the control that had defined so many of their performances over the previous decade.

Arsenal’s early advantage reflected their positive approach, with Lewis-Skelly once again demonstrating his growing importance to Arteta’s side. The young defender showed composure and awareness in creating the opening goal, continuing an impressive display despite recent transfer links involving Chelsea and Manchester United.

City did create opportunities, particularly through Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was equal to the task, producing important saves from low and driven efforts.

The match, played at the Principality Stadium because Wembley was hosting The Weeknd’s After Hours til Dawn tour, attracted an attendance of 58,056, and Arsenal gave their supporters plenty to celebrate.

Christos Tzolis steals the Community Shield spotlight

If Arsenal’s early goal set the tone, Tzolis provided the quality that transformed the match into a convincing victory.

The Greek forward, who joined Arsenal for £34m this summer, was particularly influential down the left side and demonstrated why the club moved to bring him back to English football after his earlier spell with Norwich City.

Tzolis played a crucial role in Arsenal’s second goal in the 28th minute. After Martin Odegaard delivered the ball into the area, the 24-year-old headed it back across goal, allowing Havertz to direct a downward header past Donnarumma.

The goal gave Arsenal a deserved 2-0 advantage and exposed the difficulties City were having in dealing with the Gunners’ movement and physical presence.

Tzolis was directly involved in 40 goals for Club Brugge last season, scoring 17 times and providing 23 assists, and his first major competitive appearance for Arsenal suggested that he could become an important creative weapon during the Premier League season.

His second assist arrived shortly after half-time. Tzolis found Odegaard inside the Manchester City box, and the Arsenal captain showed his trademark composure, sending Donnarumma to the ground with an excellent fake shot before rolling the ball into the opposite corner.

The goal made it 3-0 and effectively ended the contest.

Tzolis had announced himself in the best possible fashion, while Arsenal’s attacking combinations offered an encouraging glimpse of what Arteta will hope to produce throughout the Premier League season.

Community Shield victory gives Arsenal another trophy

The final whistle confirmed Arsenal’s 18th Community Shield triumph, marking another significant addition to a period of growing success for the club.

The victory over Manchester City was Arsenal’s second trophy in four months and gave the Premier League champions a positive start before the serious demands of the domestic campaign begin.

Arteta will also have been encouraged by contributions from across his squad. Bruno Guimaraes, another new addition, started at the base of midfield, although he had a relatively quiet game, while Lewis-Skelly impressed and Havertz once again delivered an important goal.

Odegaard could have added another before half-time when one of his efforts was cleared off the line by Josko Gvardiol. Bukayo Saka, introduced during the second half, also missed an opportunity late in the game when he fired over from a promising position.

Nevertheless, Arsenal had already done more than enough to secure the Community Shield comfortably.

Their victory was also notable for its similarities to another memorable Arsenal win over City. Manchester City’s 3-0 defeat represented their heaviest loss in the competition since 2014, when Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal beat Manuel Pellegrini’s side by the same scoreline.

This time, however, the result came with a different significance. Arsenal are now the reigning Premier League champions, and they looked every bit like a team determined to retain their crown.

Manchester City’s new era begins with a difficult defeat

For Manchester City, this was a disappointing introduction to competitive football under Maresca.

The match represented City’s first competitive fixture without Guardiola as manager in more than a decade, and the new era began with a performance that raised questions rather than provided immediate answers.

Maresca handed £116m signing Elliot Anderson his competitive debut, while Foden returned to the starting line-up after falling out of favour during Guardiola’s final season.

Jack Grealish also made his first Manchester City appearance in 15 months when he came on during the second half, but neither he nor the other City substitutes could change the direction of the game.

Manchester City did have moments when they tested Raya, but they were unable to consistently break through an organised Arsenal side. More concerningly, they could not match Arsenal’s physicality and were punished by a team that played with greater cohesion and purpose.

One match does not define an entire Premier League season, but Maresca and his players will understand that significant improvement is required after such a comprehensive defeat.

What the result means for the Premier League season

The Community Shield is often viewed as a curtain-raiser rather than a reliable predictor of the Premier League season, yet Arsenal’s performance will give them enormous confidence.

They were sharp from the opening seconds, clinical in front of goal and defensively composed when City threatened. Most importantly, new signing Tzolis immediately showed that he could add another dimension to Arsenal’s attack.

The Gunners now turn their attention to their Premier League opener against Coventry City on Friday, while Manchester City will look to respond when they host Bournemouth on Sunday.

Arsenal have begun their campaign with silverware and a powerful statement. For City, the first major challenge of the Maresca era has already arrived.
