WSL table leaders Manchester City strengthened their position at the summit with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium, extending their perfect start to the Women’s Super League season and increasing the pressure on Gunners manager Renee Slegers.
City twice came from behind in an entertaining contest, with Lauren Hemp scoring twice before Khadija Shaw completed the comeback late in the second half. Kerstin Casparij also made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, scoring with her first touch to swing the game decisively in the hosts’ favour.
The victory means Manchester City remain the only team to have won all five of their league matches this season. Arsenal, meanwhile, are now 10 points behind the defending champions after just five games, leaving their title ambitions in serious danger.
Arsenal Strike First Before Hemp Responds

Manchester City entered the contest as favourites after winning their opening four league matches, but Arsenal showed plenty of determination despite their difficult start to the campaign.
The visitors took the lead in the 43rd minute when Lisa Baum bundled the ball over the line from close range. The goal gave Arsenal a reward for their resilience after City had created several promising openings during the first half.
Manchester City, however, responded almost immediately.
Hemp levelled the contest in first-half stoppage time, producing a powerful finish from an acute angle after receiving the ball from Naomi Layzell. The England international’s strike ensured the teams went into the interval level at 1-1 and gave City renewed momentum.
The equaliser also underlined Hemp’s growing influence in an attack that had struggled to turn sustained pressure into goals during the opening stages.
Arsenal, though, responded strongly after the restart.
Hemp’s Brace Takes City Top of WSL Table

Alessia Russo restored Arsenal’s lead in the 49th minute after Yui Hasegawa’s stray pass presented the forward with an opportunity inside the penalty area. Russo made no mistake, thumping her effort into the far corner to put Arsenal 2-1 ahead.
For a period, Arsenal looked capable of producing a major result against the defending champions.
That lead lasted only until the 63rd minute.
City substitute Kerstin Casparij made an immediate impact, curling a superb effort into the top-right corner with her first touch after entering the game. Her goal completely changed the momentum and gave Manchester City fresh belief.
Hemp then completed her brace nine minutes later.
The forward found space inside the Arsenal penalty area before calmly sliding the ball underneath goalkeeper Anneke Borbe to put City ahead for the first time. Her second goal completed a remarkable turnaround and gave Arsenal another defensive problem to solve.
Shaw eventually put the result beyond doubt in the 84th minute, firing from the edge of the area with her effort taking a slight deflection before finding the net.
Manchester City had turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 victory in the space of 35 minutes.
City Defeat Pressure Mounts on Arsenal

The result has significant consequences for the WSL table and for both clubs’ respective ambitions this season.
Manchester City now sit at the top after maintaining their perfect record, while Arsenal’s latest defeat leaves them trailing the champions by 10 points after only five matches.
That gap is particularly damaging because Arsenal entered the season with expectations of competing for major honours. Their struggles in front of goal had already raised questions, and although they scored twice against City, their inability to protect a lead exposed further weaknesses.
The defeat also places greater scrutiny on Slegers, whose position has already attracted attention following Arsenal’s disappointing start.
The Gunners arrived in Manchester seven points behind City and knew another defeat would leave them in a difficult position. Instead, they produced a performance that showed flashes of their attacking quality before surrendering the advantage twice.
The loss could prove especially costly in the context of the title race.
Manchester City Show Why They Remain the Team to Beat

For City manager Andree Jeglertz, this was arguably the most significant test of the season so far.
The champions had won their opening four league matches, but Arsenal provided a considerably stronger challenge and exposed some of City’s vulnerabilities. Hemp and Shaw struggled to influence proceedings for long periods, while Arsenal created opportunities of their own.
City’s ability to recover twice, however, demonstrated their depth and attacking quality.
Casparij’s immediate contribution from the bench was particularly important, while Hemp’s brace showed why she remains one of the most dangerous attacking players in the league. Shaw also recovered from an unusually quiet spell to produce the decisive late goal.
City survived moments when the match could have gone against them and ultimately punished Arsenal’s defensive weaknesses.
For Arsenal, there were positives despite the defeat. Russo’s goal was an excellent reminder of her finishing ability, while Baum’s opener gave the visitors a platform to challenge City.
But the final score reflected a familiar problem: Arsenal can compete with the league’s strongest sides but are struggling to sustain their performance for the full 90 minutes.
With the season only five games old, the title race is far from mathematically decided. Yet Manchester City’s perfect record and Arsenal’s 10-point deficit have already created a significant divide.
The champions have sent an emphatic warning to their rivals, while Arsenal now face an increasingly urgent battle to keep their season from slipping away.
