After two straight losses, where do Notre Dame women stand with bracketologists?

by

Less than two hours after the NCAA put out its second and final top-16 seed reveal for women’s basketball, keeping Notre Dame as a No. 1 seed, the Irish went and lost their second consecutive game Thursday night.

Notre Dame, which lost to NC State in double overtime on Sunday, followed that up with an 86-81 setback to Florida State on Thursday night.

No. 4/3-ranked Notre Dame (24-4, 15-2 ACC) has been a projected No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament for most of the season. But how do these latest setbacks effect the Irish in national bracketology predictions?

Here is a look at some of today’s predictions along with the Irish NCAA Tournament résumé.

Current Notre Dame women’s basketball NCAA Tournament résumé

Notre Dame NET ranking: 4 (no movement)

Strength of schedule: No. 9 (non-conference No. 6)

Quad 1 record: 6-4

Quad 2 record: 7-0

Quad 3 record: 3-0

Quad 4 record: 8-0

The quadrant system accounts for the location of the game and the opposing team’s NET ranking. Quad 1 games, for instance, are at home against teams ranked Nos. 1-30 in the NET, on a neutral court against teams ranked Nos. 1-50, and on the road against teams ranked Nos. 1-75.

Unfortunately for the Irish, all four of their losses (TCU, Utah, NC State and Florida State) fall into the Quad 1 category.

ESPN bracketology

ESPN has dropped Notre Dame to a No. 2-seed, playing 15-seed Tennessee Tech in the Birmingham Region 4. Of course all top four seeds host the first two rounds of the tournament, meaning two more games to play in South Bend after Sunday’s season finale against Louisville.

CBS Sports bracketology

CBS has also dropped the Irish to a No. 2 seed, with projected 15-seeds as Southeast Louisiana, Lehigh, Albany and Charleston.
