The vote concluded with 466 members supporting Sweeney, while 206 voted against him, effectively quelling the grassroots-led no-confidence motion that had threatened his tenure.

The call for Sweeney’s removal was propelled by the Whole Game Union (WGU), a coalition comprising Championship clubs, the Rugby Football Referees’ Union (RFRU), and various grassroots organizations. Central to their grievance was Sweeney’s substantial £1.1 million earnings, which included a £358,000 bonus, awarded during a period when the RFU reported a £40 million loss and implemented staff redundancies.
Beyond financial concerns, the WGU highlighted issues such as the RFU’s handling of club liquidations—including London Irish, Wasps, Worcester, and Jersey Reds—the rollout of new tackle height regulations, and a perceived erosion of trust among volunteers who form the backbone of grassroots rugby.
