Defender Huijsen ruled out of Spain squad with muscle injury

Spain’s plans for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers have been dealt a blow after young centre-back Dean Huijsen was withdrawn from the national squad due to a muscle injury.

According to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Huijsen arrived at camp in Las Rozas, but reported muscle fatigue and was unable to train on Tuesday. A subsequent medical examination confirmed the injury, prompting his departure from the squad and notification to his club, Real Madrid.

The injury has been identified more specifically as damage to the soleus muscle in his left leg. The soleus is a muscle in the calf region that plays a key role in walking, running, and stabilising the ankle — any strain there can compromise mobility and performance, particularly for a defender who must change direction, sprint, and brace in challenging footwork.

Replacement and squad adjustments

To fill the void, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has called up veteran defender Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao as Huijsen’s replacement. Laporte brings experience, having been part of Spain’s recent successful squads, and his inclusion gives the national side stability in defence at a critical juncture.

Implications & context

Huijsen’s withdrawal is a setback for Spain’s defensive depth. The 20-year-old had recently moved to Real Madrid from Bournemouth in a high-profile deal and was showing promise under coach Xabi Alonso. His omission adds to Spain’s list of injury concerns; forward Lamine Yamal is already out with a groin issue, and other absences have tested squad planning.

Spain sit atop Group E in European qualifying, and they are set to host Georgia in Elche on Saturday, followed by Bulgaria in Valladolid three days later. These fixtures are crucial as Spain push to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup.

While Huijsen’s injury highlights the physical toll on young players amid busy club and international schedules, the hope is that the withdrawal is precautionary rather than long-term. If managed carefully, he may return once fully recovered and ready.
