The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly struck a three-year, $69 million contract with free-agent closer Edwin Díaz — a move widely viewed as a major offseason splash.
What the deal means
- The contract gives Díaz the highest average annual value (AAV) ever for a relief pitcher — roughly $23 M per season.
- Díaz, 31, had an excellent 2025 season with the New York Mets: a 1.63 ERA, 98 strikeouts over 66⅓ innings, and 28 saves in 31 opportunities.
- The Dodgers’ bullpen — which struggled generally in 2025 — now gains a proven closer, likely filling a key hole in high-leverage innings.
What changes for Mets and Dodgers
- Díaz opted out of the remaining two years and $38 million on his prior Mets contract to test free agency.
- In response, the Mets signed another reliever in hopes of replacing him, but losing Díaz represents a clear blow to their bullpen strength.
- For the Dodgers, the move signals renewed emphasis on bullpen dominance — and represents one of their biggest investments this winter.
