Duke University freshman Cooper Flagg has been named the Associated Press (AP) Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. Flagg becomes only the fourth freshman in the award’s 64-year history to receive this honor, joining the ranks of Kevin Durant (2007), Anthony Davis (2012), and Zion Williamson (2019).

Hailing from Newport, Maine, the 6-foot-9, 205-pound forward has had an exceptional debut season with the Blue Devils. Flagg leads the team in several key statistical categories, averaging 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. Additionally, he ranks second on the team with 1.3 blocks per game. His standout performances include a 42-point game against Notre Dame and a 30-point showing in the NCAA Tournament against Arizona.

The AP award was determined by a national media panel, with Flagg receiving 41 votes, surpassing Auburn’s Johni Broome, who garnered 21 votes. No other players received votes. This accolade adds to Flagg’s growing list of honors, as he was also named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Player and Freshman of the Year, becoming only the second player to sweep both awards, following Zion Williamson.

Flagg’s success is attributed not only to his talent but also to his maturity and composure under pressure. His relentless work ethic and focus on team success have been evident throughout the season. Supported by his teammates, family, and coaching staff, Flagg has shown significant development both offensively and defensively, notably improving his shooting and three-point percentages.

As the Blue Devils prepare for their Final Four matchup against the University of Houston, Flagg’s leadership and performance will be pivotal. Rebounding has been identified as a crucial factor in this upcoming game, with both teams showcasing strong capabilities on the boards. Duke averages 38.6 rebounds per game, slightly edging out Houston’s 36.2. Flagg, along with teammate Khaman Maluach, who averages 6.8 rebounds per game, will need to assert their presence to control the boards effectively.

Flagg’s remarkable season has not gone unnoticed by NBA scouts and executives. He has consistently held the top spot in ESPN’s Top 100 rankings for the 2025 NBA draft class. NBA executives have drawn comparisons between Flagg and established stars like Jayson Tatum and Scottie Pippen, highlighting his versatility and potential at the professional level.

Reflecting on his journey, Flagg’s rapid ascent in college basketball is a testament to his dedication and skill. From his high school days at Montverde Academy, where he led his team to a national championship with a perfect 33-0 record, to becoming a pivotal player for Duke, his trajectory has been nothing short of extraordinary.

As the NCAA Tournament progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Flagg continues to impact the game. His performances have not only elevated Duke’s season but have also positioned him as a top prospect for the upcoming NBA Draft. Whether he decides to declare for the draft or return for another season, Flagg’s future in basketball looks exceptionally bright.
