Fan group urges FIFA to halt World Cup ticket sales over ‘extortionate’ prices

A major supporters’ organisation has called on FIFA to immediately stop selling tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the costs are so high they risk shutting out regular fans and undermining the event’s spirit.

The European umbrella fan group Football Supporters Europe (FSE) issued the appeal after national federations circulated pricing details for tickets allocated through Participating Member Associations (PMAs) — the official supporter channels for fans of individual teams. Based on those figures, a fan hoping to follow their team from the group stage to the final via the PMA route would face a minimum of about $6,900, nearly five times more than equivalent costs at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

FSE described the pricing as “extortionate” and called the situation a “monumental betrayal” of World Cup tradition and of loyal travelling supporters. Under the current structure, FIFA has reserved the cheapest ticket category — Category 4 — for general public sales, while supporters’ groups are being offered higher-priced options. This means fans could pay dramatically different amounts for the same matches depending on how and when they purchase.

The organisation also criticised FIFA’s introduction of variable pricing (sometimes called “dynamic pricing”), which ties ticket costs to factors such as perceived match appeal rather than maintaining consistent levels across fixtures. That has resulted in significant price differences even for group-stage games.

FSE’s statement warned that the lack of affordable tickets could wipe out the vibrant match-day atmosphere that travelling supporters traditionally bring to World Cups. Group Executive Director Ronan Evain told Reuters that tickets for the final could approach about $4,000, and noted that a family of four might spend around $30,000 to attend games in person — costs far beyond what most ordinary fans could afford.

The group has urged FIFA to pause PMA ticket sales immediately and enter consultations with supporters, national associations, and other stakeholders to devise a fairer pricing system that honours the “universality and cultural significance” of the World Cup.

FIFA has not yet publicly responded to the demand, but ticket sales continue and the controversy has sparked wider fan outcry in multiple countries as more pricing information becomes known.

Key points fans are protesting

  • PMA ticket prices much higher than in 2022 Qatar World Cup.
  • Cheapest Category 4 tickets largely unavailable to official supporters via national associations.
  • Variable pricing means similar matches can cost different amounts.
  • Estimated total costs could exceed $6,900 for a full tournament run via official channels.

Why it matters

Fans argue that the World Cup should be an inclusive event that rewards passion and loyalty — but they fear that current pricing policies are making in-stadium attendance a luxury only the wealthy can afford.
