The Golden State Warriors‘ playoff aspirations have encountered a significant hurdle as star forward Jimmy Butler suffered a pelvic contusion during Game 2 of their first-round series against the Houston Rockets. The injury occurred late in the first quarter when Butler landed hard after being undercut by Rockets guard Amen Thompson during a rebound attempt. Despite briefly remaining in the game to shoot free throws, Butler exited shortly thereafter and did not return.

The Warriors confirmed that Butler will undergo an MRI in San Francisco to assess the severity of the injury. Head coach Steve Kerr expressed concern, stating, “Obviously feel terrible for Jimmy. Hopefully he’s OK. We’ll see.”

Butler’s absence was felt acutely as the Warriors fell 109-94 to the Rockets, allowing Houston to even the series at 1-1. Jalen Green led the Rockets with 38 points, including eight three-pointers, while Alperen Sengun contributed 17 points, 16 rebounds, and seven assists.

Since joining the Warriors in February, Butler has been instrumental in the team’s success, averaging 17.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. His leadership and versatility have been key factors in Golden State’s 23-8 record following his acquisition.

The timeline for Butler’s return remains uncertain, with recovery from pelvic contusions varying based on severity. Some cases resolve within one to three weeks, while others may take longer.

The Warriors will need to adjust their strategy and rotations in Butler’s absence. Coach Kerr indicated that changes are forthcoming, stating, “If Jimmy’s out, we have to rethink everything—rotations, who starts, the best combinations.”

Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Chase Center in San Francisco. The Warriors will aim to regroup and reclaim the series lead, with or without their star forward.
