Hansen Hat-Trick Silences Doubts About His Commitment to Ireland

Mack Hansen made an emphatic statement of loyalty on Saturday, scoring a first-half hat-trick for Ireland in a dominant 46–19 victory over Australia — the country of his birth.

The Canberra-born fullback crossed the line three times in under 30 minutes, helping Ireland race into a commanding lead. Restoring his place in the national side after a foot injury, Hansen said he was determined to “do what I can do” and repay the faith shown in him.

Mack ’s journey to the Irish squad hasn’t been straightforward. Though born and raised in Australia, he qualifies for Ireland through his Cork-born mother and moved to Connacht in 2021 to further his international aspirations. Having made his debut in 2022, he’s since become a key player, earning a nomination for World Rugby’s Breakthrough Player award.

Speaking after the match, Mack acknowledged the ongoing chatter about his background:

“I know there’s a lot of chat about me not necessarily being born here … but I love this team and this feels like home.”

Head coach Andy Farrell heaped praise on Hansen, noting not only his finishing but his preparation, attitude, and composure — all on display in his first test start at full-back.

His three-try blitz didn’t just underscore his class — it also laid to rest any lingering questions about where his allegiances lie. With that performance, Hansen made it unmistakably clear: when it comes to Ireland, he’s fully all in.
