HOUSTON — The city of Houston, in collaboration with the Foreman family, will host a public memorial service to honor the life and legacy of George Foreman, the two-time heavyweight boxing champion, ordained minister, and successful entrepreneur. The service is scheduled for Monday, April 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Wortham Theater Center’s Cullen Theater in downtown Houston.
Foreman, who passed away peacefully on March 21 at the age of 76, was a native of Houston’s Fifth Ward. His remarkable journey from humble beginnings to global fame has left an indelible mark on the city and the world.
Celebrating a Multifaceted Legacy
The memorial service will feature tributes from family members, city officials, and figures from the boxing community. Speakers include Foreman’s son, George Foreman IV, Houston Mayor John Whitmire, and former heavyweight champion Michael Moorer, whom Foreman famously defeated in 1994 to reclaim the heavyweight title at age 45.
Musical performances will be provided by the Houston Symphony, the University of Houston Choir, and guest vocalists, reflecting Foreman’s deep ties to the community.
A Life Beyond the Ring
George Foreman’s impact extended far beyond his boxing achievements. After winning a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics and becoming heavyweight champion in 1973, he experienced a spiritual awakening that led him to become an ordained minister in 1978. He founded The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Houston in 1980, dedicating his life to faith and community service.
Foreman’s entrepreneurial spirit shone through with the success of the George Foreman Grill, which sold over 100 million units worldwide. He also established the George Foreman Youth and Community Center, providing support and opportunities for young people in Houston.
Public Participation and Tributes
While the memorial service is open to the public, all available tickets have been distributed due to limited seating. For those unable to attend in person, the City of Houston will livestream the event on Houston Municipal Television’s website and Facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, the Foreman family requests that donations be made to The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ or The George Foreman Charitable Foundation.
A Lasting Impact
George Foreman’s legacy as a champion, minister, and entrepreneur continues to inspire countless individuals. His dedication to faith, family, and community service exemplifies the profound impact one person can have across multiple spheres of life.
