Anfield showdown: How long can Amorim withstand the heat

by Osmond OMOLU

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim may have enjoyed a rare pause during the international break, buoyed by public backing from co-owner Jim Ratcliffe. But his respite looks likely to end when United travel to face Liverpool at Anfield, in a fixture that could prove critical for his future.

Since replacing Erik ten Hag in November 2024, Amorim has registered just 10 wins in 34 Premier League outings. Ratcliffe has stood by Amorim, insisting the Portuguese coach should be allowed the full three years of his contract to turn things around.

Victory at Anfield could offer much-needed momentum. It would mark Amorim’s first back-to-back league wins at United – a milestone with both symbolic and practical weight. On the other hand, another poor showing would and likely intensify scrutiny of his position and credibility, especially given heightened expectations and limited evidence of sustained improvement so far.

New signings such as Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have shown promise, though others like Matheus Cunha have yet to make the expected impact. United currently sit 10th in the table, still trying to find consistency.

In short, the Anfield clash isn’t just another game for Amorim. It represents a test of his ability to respond under pressure, justify the faith shown in him, and perhaps shift the narrative around his tenure.
