India dealt an early blow to West Indies after declaring at 518-5 in their first innings of the second and final Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The hosts’ innings was marked by commanding contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made 175 before being run out, and captain Shubman Gill, who remained unbeaten on 129. Other useful contributions came from Nitish Kumar Reddy (44) and Dhruv Jurel (43) as India surged past the 500 mark.
When West Indies began their reply, bowlers struck early. The visitors were reduced to 26-1 by tea, still trailing by 492 runs. The lone wicket was of opener John Campbell, dismissed for 10. His departure came via a stunning reflex catch by B Sai Sudharsan at forward short leg — the ball struck the grill of his helmet before he clutched it in his hands.
India’s declaration and the immediate response with the ball place them in a dominant position in the match and greatly increase their chances of completing a 2-0 series sweep over the West Indies.
