India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has adopted a cautious tone when asked about the prospects of veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma participating in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Despite acknowledging their value and experience, he has declined to make firm promises about their inclusion or long-term roles in the team.
At a recent media engagement following India’s Test series win over the West Indies, Gambhir emphasized that the focus must remain on present performances rather than speculation about the distant future. “The 50-over World Cup is still two-and-a-half years away, and I think it is very important to stay in the present,” he said. He added that Kohli and Rohit are “quality players,” and their experience would be beneficial, especially on the upcoming Australian tour, but stopped short of projecting beyond that.
The uncertainty around their futures stems partly from age and form concerns. By 2027, Rohit will be 40 and Kohli 39, raising questions about how long they can sustain performance at the highest level. Currently, both are active exclusively in the 50-over format and have been selected for the forthcoming ODI series in Australia. However, Gambhir has left open the possibility that their roles could shift or diminish depending on form, fitness, and team balance.
Previously, Gambhir has expressed support for their continued involvement—if conditions permit. In earlier comments, he stated that both Rohit and Kohli could remain part of India’s ODI setup until 2027, provided they maintain fitness and productivity. But he also noted that the ultimate decision lies with the players and the selection committee.
Gambhir’s reluctance to commit fully at this juncture may also reflect the broader challenge India faces in managing a transition between established stars and rising talent. The team wants to strike a balance—honoring the contributions of Kohli and Rohit while preparing for the future. Keeping options open allows flexibility depending on how the intervening tours and series play out.
For now, the message is clear: Kohli and Rohit will have opportunities to contribute—provided they deliver—while the team management watches closely. Whether they will still be central figures when the World Cup arrives remains uncertain, and Gambhir appears intent on avoiding premature verdicts.
