ISU women can’t maintain fast start, lose at Drake

Indiana State had a red-hot start offensively in a Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball game at Drake on Thursday.

The Sycamores jumped ahead 22-11 after less than five minutes and still owned a 35-33 advantage after a quarter, but they couldn’t contain the host Bulldogs after that and lost 107-86.

Savannah White had a career-high 24 points plus 11 rebounds and Keslyn Secrist also added a career-high 24 points for the Sycamores. Bella Finnegan contributed 22 points and Deja Jones scored just four points but posted nine rebounds and eight assists.

ISU was held to just 14 points in the second quarter. By halftime, Drake had pulled into a 59-49 lead. It was an 88-73 game after three quarters.

The Sycamores hit 11 of 21 3-point attempts for 53%, but shot just 44% from the field overall and missed seven of their 14 free-throw attempts.

Drake, led by Katie Dinnebier with 35 points, shot 59% from the field and was 15 for 17 from the foul line. The Bulldogs also were 8 for 18 from long range.

Indiana State is now 4-24 for the season, 2-15 in the MVC, and has its final road game of the season Saturday at Evansville. The Sycamores will finish their regular season with home games March 6 and March 8 against Belmont and Murray State.

Drake is now 19-9, 13-4 in conference play.
