Team Europe has announced that Spanish golf legend José María Olazábal will serve as one of its vice-captains for the 2025 Ryder Cup, scheduled to take place at Bethpage Black in New York from September 26 to 28. This appointment marks Olazábal’s fifth stint in the vice-captain role, bringing his extensive experience and leadership to support captain Luke Donald in defending Europe’s title on American soil.
A Storied Ryder Cup Legacy
Olazábal’s association with the Ryder Cup is both deep and illustrious. As a player, he represented Europe in seven editions between 1987 and 2006, participating in 31 matches and forming a formidable partnership with fellow Spaniard Seve Ballesteros. Notably, Olazábal captained the European team to a remarkable comeback victory at the 2012 Ryder Cup in Medinah, Illinois, often referred to as the “Miracle at Medinah.”
Embracing the Challenge
Upon being approached by Luke Donald for the vice-captaincy, Olazábal admitted to initial hesitation due to the challenges posed by the New York venue. “I have to be honest, I thought about it for a while because being in New York, it’s not going to be easy,” he said. However, his deep affection for the Ryder Cup and its significance in his career led him to accept the role. “The Ryder Cup is very close to my heart. I have wonderful memories about this event, so I said yes.”
