In a landmark move just ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions have signed All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph to a four-year, $86 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid safety in NFL history. The deal averages $21.5 million annually, surpassing the previous record set by Tampa Bay’s Antoine Winfield Jr., who signed a four-year, $84.1 million contract averaging $21.025 million per year.

From Third-Round Pick to Defensive Star

Drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Illinois, Joseph has rapidly ascended to elite status among NFL safeties. In the 2024 season, he led the league with nine interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, and recorded 83 tackles and 12 passes defensed over 17 starts. His performance earned him First-Team All-Pro honors and the highest overall and coverage grades among safeties from Pro Football Focus.

A Strategic Move by the Lions

General Manager Brad Holmes emphasized the importance of retaining homegrown talent, stating, “He fits our culture. It’s hard to find ballhawk guys that will tackle like how he does.” Joseph’s extension aligns with the Lions’ philosophy of drafting, developing, and re-signing key players to build a championship-caliber roster.

Joseph’s Commitment to Detroit

Expressing his desire to remain with the Lions long-term, Joseph said, “I wanna be a lifelong Lion, man. I just love Detroit. I love the city, I love the people, I love the fans.” His commitment reflects a mutual appreciation between the player and the organization, solidifying his role as a cornerstone of the Lions’ defense.

Implications for the Lions’ Future

With Joseph secured, the Lions boast a formidable safety duo alongside Brian Branch, who has also earned Pro Bowl honors. This extension not only rewards Joseph’s exceptional performance but also positions the Lions’ secondary as one of the most formidable in the league.

As the Lions prepare for the upcoming season, Joseph’s leadership and playmaking abilities will be pivotal in their pursuit of sustained success.
