RB Leipzig suffered a setback in the Bundesliga title race after being beaten 3–1 by Union Berlin in their away match on Friday, missing a key chance to narrow the gap on league leaders Bayern Munich. The defeat marked Leipzig’s third loss of the season and leaves them trailing further behind in the title hunt.

The game at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei was tight for much of the first half, but Union broke through shortly after the hour mark. Oliver Burke opened the scoring in the 57th minute with a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner, leaving RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi stranded.

Leipzig responded immediately — substitute Tidiam Gomis found the net just a minute later with a strong low finish to level the score — but their reprieve was short-lived. Just three minutes later, Ilyas Ansah headed Union back in front, capitalising on a well-delivered cross. In stoppage time, Tim Skarke sealed the victory for the hosts with a third goal, ensuring all three points stayed in Berlin.

The loss means Leipzig remain second in the Bundesliga standings with 29 points, eight behind Bayern Munich, who can extend their advantage further with a win in their next match against Mainz 05. Third-placed Borussia Dortmund, just one point behind Leipzig, also have a game in hand and could close the gap with a positive result.

For Union Berlin, the result was a welcome boost. It ended a recent run of poor results and lifted them into eighth place with 18 points, providing momentum ahead of the busy winter schedule.

What this means for the title race

Leipzig’s defeat is significant in the context of the Bundesliga title race. At a point when narrowing the gap on Bayern was crucial, they missed a key opportunity to cut down the leaders’ advantage, instead allowing their rivals to potentially extend it further. With the season approaching its second half and fixtures becoming tighter, dropping points against lower-positioned teams could prove costly in what is shaping up to be a competitive title battle.

The result also puts pressure on Leipzig’s title aspirations, as they can no longer rely on consistency alone; setbacks like this highlight the narrow margin for error in pursuing Bayern at the top of the table.

Summary: Union Berlin’s 3–1 win over RB Leipzig not only handed the home side a morale-boosting victory but also damaged Leipzig’s chances of closing in on Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga, leaving their title hopes hanging by a thread.
