Michigan State’s Theryn Hallock controls the ball against Penn State, Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, in East Lansing.

The Michigan State women’s basketball team had its comeback fall short while suffering an 89-78 road loss to Ohio State in a top-25 matchup Wednesday at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

The No. 23-ranked Spartans went on 14-2 run to start the fourth quarter to get as close as seven but went the final 4:49 without making a field goal while dropping their road finale to the No. 12-ranked Buckeyes.

Theryn Hallock had a career-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting and knocked down all five of her 3-point attempts to lead MSU (20-8, 10-7). Grace VanSlooten added 19 points and nine rebounds for the Spartans, who dropped into a three-way tie for sixth place in the Big Ten with Michigan and Oregon entering the final weekend of the regular season.

Freshman Jaloni Cambridge had a game-high 33 points and senior Ajae Petty had a double-double with 23 points on 11-of-11 shooting and added 15 rebounds and six assists while helping Ohio State (24-4, 13-4) improve to 15-0 at home.

Ohio State went on a 12-4 run during the latter portion of the second quarter while building a double-digit advantage it maintained for a majority of the rest of the night. The Buckeyes led by as much 20 in the early stages of the fourth quarter.

After the Spartans got within seven on a free throw by Hallock with 4:16 to play, Ohio State got back-to-back baskets from McMahon and Cambridge. The only points MSU scored late came on free throws by Jaddan Simmons.

MSU returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when it closes the regular season against Minnesota at Breslin Center.
