The Minnesota Vikings are strengthening their defense and offensive lines by reaching agreements with Defensive Lineman Jonathan Allen and Guard Will Fries.
Minnesota Vikings New Signings Profile
Jonathan Allen, a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders, was released by Washington on Friday and became a free agent ahead of the NFL’s new league year, which begins Wednesday.
Over his time with the Commanders, the 30-year-old played 108 regular-season games, recording 42 sacks, 401 tackles (60 for a loss), 118 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

In the 2024 season, Allen was sidelined for most of the year due to a torn pectoral muscle sustained in Week 6 but returned for the last two regular-season games and helped his team reach the NFC Championship. In Minnesota, Allen is expected to take on the role of the top defensive lineman under coordinator Brian Flores.
With veteran Jerry Tillery set to hit free agency, the Vikings sought to pair Allen with Harrison Phillips, who has emerged as a leader on the defensive line during his three years with the team.
Before his injury in 2024, Allen was known for his durability, missing only three games over his previous six seasons. His best performance came in 2021 when he recorded a career-high nine sacks and 30 quarterback hits.
When healthy, however, he has been one of the NFL’s top interior defenders. A two-time Pro Bowler, he accumulated 38 sacks and 57 tackles for loss between 2018 and 2023.
According to Adam Schefter, Allen’s new contract with the Minnesota Vikings is a three-year deal worth $60 million.
Will Fries
Will Fries, who was drafted in the seventh round by the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, has signed a five-year contract worth $88 million. He spent four seasons with the Colts before moving to Minnesota.
Chosen by the Colts in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Fries has consistently developed his skills, eventually earning a starting position. Although he was placed on injured reserve last season due to a broken tibia, Fries is still just 26 years old and seems to be progressing positively in his career.
Byron Murphy Juicy New Deal
The Minnesota Vikings also made a significant move earlier in the week, retaining their top cornerback, Byron Murphy, with a lucrative deal. The following day, they added Allen to their defensive line.
