In a groundbreaking move bridging American basketball and English football, NBA Hall of Famer and Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd has joined the ownership group of Premier League club Everton FC. Kidd becomes part of Roundhouse Capital Holdings, a division of The Friedkin Group, which finalized its acquisition of Everton in December 2024.

Kidd’s Transition from NBA Star to Football Investor

Jason Kidd, renowned for his illustrious NBA career—including a 2011 championship with the Mavericks, ten All-Star selections, and two Olympic gold medals—expressed enthusiasm about his new role. “I’m honored to be joining Everton’s ownership at such an important moment: with a new stadium on the horizon and a bright future ahead, it’s a great moment to come on board,” Kidd stated.

His involvement underscores a growing trend of American sports figures investing in European football, aiming to blend diverse sports management experiences and expand global sports portfolios.

The Friedkin Group’s Strategic Acquisition

The Friedkin Group, led by American billionaire Dan Friedkin, acquired a 98.8% stake in Everton through Roundhouse Capital Holdings. This acquisition, valued at over £400 million ($506 million), marks Everton as the 10th Premier League club under majority American ownership.

Dan Friedkin, also owner of Italian Serie A club AS Roma, expressed pride in adding Everton to his sports ventures. “Everton represents a proud legacy, and we are honored to become custodians of this great institution,” Friedkin remarked.

Everton’s Financial Revamp and Stadium Development

Under the new ownership, Everton has secured a £350 million ($465.96 million) long-term financing deal for their upcoming 52,888-seat stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, set to open for the 2025–26 season.

Additionally, the Friedkin Group has addressed the club’s financial challenges by converting significant debts into equity and refinancing existing obligations, aiming to stabilize Everton’s financial standing.

On-Field Performance and Managerial Changes

Everton’s performance has seen improvement since the return of manager David Moyes in January. Currently positioned 13th in the Premier League standings, the club is striving to reestablish itself as a competitive force in English football.

Broader Implications of Kidd’s Involvement

Jason Kidd’s entry into Everton’s ownership exemplifies the increasing intersection of American sports professionals with European football. His diverse experience is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives to Everton’s strategic direction, both on and off the pitch.

As Everton embarks on this new chapter, the collaboration between seasoned sports executives and the club’s rich heritage holds promise for a revitalized future.
