Aryna Sabalenka — the world No. 1 in women’s tennis — has dismissed concerns that her upcoming exhibition match against Nick Kyrgios could damage the standing of women’s tennis.
The contest, billed as a “Battle of the Sexes” and scheduled for December 28, has drawn comparisons to the legendary show-match of 1973. Despite some critics warning the event might belittle the women’s game — especially if Sabalenka loses — she argues it will have the opposite effect. “We’re there to have fun and bring great tennis,” she said, adding: “This event is only going to help bring women’s tennis to a higher level.”
Sabalenka acknowledged the biological strength differences between men and women, but emphasized that the match isn’t meant to be a scientific comparison of gender ability — it’s entertainment, an opportunity to showcase women’s athleticism and the sport’s appeal.
In short, she believes it’s a “win-win” scenario: regardless of the result, women’s tennis wins exposure, and the match could draw attention to the athleticism and competitiveness of female players.
