David Puig secured the title at the Australian PGA Championship after firing a 5-under 66 in the final round at Royal Queensland Golf Club, finishing at 18-under par — two shots clear of runner-up Ding Wenyi.
The 23-year-old Spaniard, co-leader heading into Sunday alongside Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia and Australia’s Anthony Quayle, made the decisive move early with birdies on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes. A critical 20-foot birdie putt on the 8th stretched his advantage to three shots while his rivals faltered.
Puig’s victory carries extra significance: he becomes the first Spanish golfer to win the Australian PGA since Seve Ballesteros in 1981.
Reflecting on the win, Puig said it “feels amazing,” noting that despite several near-misses in recent tournaments, this finish — particularly on Australian soil — is “unbelievable.” It’s his third professional title overall, but the most important to date given the history and prestige of the event.
Meanwhile, Ding Wenyi of China closed with a solid round but fell short after a bogey on the 10th. Meanwhile, Australia’s Marc Leishman and New Zealand’s Nick Voke tied for third at 15-under, while former champion Min Woo Lee and Aussie stalwart Adam Scott failed to mount a serious challenge in the final round.
Puig’s breakthrough — his first on the DP World Tour — underlines a rising star in European and global golf. With the Australian PGA now in his trophy cabinet, attention will shift to whether he can build on this momentum in the tournaments ahead.
