Bayern Munich seized control of their Champions League quarter-final tie with an impressive 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, delivering a statement performance against the competition’s most decorated side.

Goals from Luis Díaz and Harry Kane gave the visitors a deserved advantage, while Kylian Mbappé pulled one back to keep the tie alive ahead of the second leg.

Bayern punish Real with clinical edge

Bayern’s dominance in the first half was rewarded just before the break when Díaz finished calmly after being set up by Serge Gnabry. The German side had already looked sharper, exploiting gaps in Madrid’s defence with quick transitions and direct attacking play.

Moments after the restart, Kane underlined his importance with a clinical strike into the bottom corner, doubling Bayern’s lead. Despite a relatively quiet first half, the England captain showed his trademark composure when it mattered most.

Real Madrid responded through Mbappé, who converted from a precise delivery by Trent Alexander-Arnold. The goal reignited the atmosphere inside the Bernabéu, and the hosts came agonizingly close many times but Bayern held firm under late pressure to secure a crucial Champions League first-leg advantage.

Midfield changes spark Madrid fightback

The introduction of Jude Bellingham added urgency and creativity to Madrid’s play, helping shift momentum in the second half. His presence injected energy into a side that had struggled to match Bayern’s intensity earlier in the game.

However, Bayern’s defensive resilience, anchored by Manuel Neuer, ensured that Madrid’s comeback hopes were limited. The veteran goalkeeper produced several key saves to preserve the lead heading into the return leg in Munich.

In Lisbon, Arsenal secured a dramatic late victory over Sporting CP, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Kai Havertz.

The match had been finely balanced, with both sides hitting the woodwork and struggling to convert chances. Sporting came closest early on through Maxi Araújo, while Arsenal threatened via Noni Madueke.

Havertz delivers when it matters

With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Gabriel Martinelli provided the decisive moment, setting up Havertz to score in stoppage time and hand Arsenal a slender but valuable advantage.

The goal capped a resilient performance from Mikel Arteta’s side, who had entered the match under pressure following consecutive defeats.

Advantage Bayern and Arsenal ahead of Champions League second legs

Bayern Munich will feel confident returning to the Allianz Arena with a lead, having outperformed Real Madrid for large spells. However, writing off Madrid in the Champions League remains a risky proposition given their history of comebacks.

Arsenal, meanwhile, take a narrow edge back to the Emirates Stadium, knowing that a disciplined performance at home could see them progress to the Champions League semi-finals.

With both ties finely poised, the second legs promise high drama as Europe’s elite clubs battle for a place in the last four.
