Unbeaten Dortmund confident ahead of trip to ‘unique’ Bayern, says Kovac

Borussia Dortmund go into their blockbuster Bundesliga match at Bayern Munich unbeaten this season in Germany and Europe, with coach Niko Kovac insisting his side can match up to one of Europe’s most in-form teams.

Dortmund currently sit second in the Bundesliga, four points behind Bayern, who themselves are riding high with 10 straight wins in all competitions. Kovac said his team are averaging about 2.3 points per game, which is strong, though Bayern’s near perfect three points per game is “unique” and underlines just how well the champions are doing.

Kovac was clear on what Dortmund must do: start the game well, stay compact, avoid conceding early, but also take the initiative rather than simply trying to defend. He warned that coming into Munich with fear or hoping to hold out might play into Bayern’s hands, since they often seize control early and dominate first halves.

Another factor stressing the challenge: this Bayern clash kicks off a difficult stretch for Dortmund. It’s the first of six away games in their next seven, including Champions League fixtures (Copenhagen, Manchester City) that loom closely after.

Kovac’s message is one of confidence, but realism. He praised Bayern’s quality and momentum, called the upcoming match “a tough challenge”, yet said Dortmund are on a good path themselves and are ready for it.
