Watford Football Club will wear a special blue third kit in their upcoming Championship home match against Blackburn Rovers to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sir Elton John becoming chairman of the club in 1976. The club traditionally plays in yellow red and black but for one game only they will step out in a striking blue kit that pays tribute to the colours Elton John first cheered on as a child and the design of his album Diamonds.
The star-themed sublimation design draws directly from that artwork and the back of the shirt is embossed with lyrics from his 1970 hit Your Song reading “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.” The kit also features the historical Happy Hornet badge used when Elton John assumed the helm at Watford. Sir Elton remains the club’s Honorary Life President and played a major role in designing the strip for this tribute match.
The launch of this one-off kit coincides with a milestone in the club’s history and encapsulates Sir Elton’s transformational leadership. Under his guidance during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Watford rose from the fourth tier of English football to finish second in the top flight in 1983, and reach the FA Cup final in 1984. His involvement was so emotional and flesh out that he famously cried at Wembley Stadium as the club competed on the national stage.
This blue kit is not just stylistic but deeply personal. The colour was worn during Sir Elton’s childhood days at Vicarage Road, making it more than a uniform—more like a memory revisited. The kit design is enriched by his personal flair, incorporating star motifs, special typography and typography style that references his music and journey with the club.
Fans and observers have noted that this minor sartorial shift marks a major narrative moment for Watford. Footy Headlines covered the release in detail noting that the kit was launched by Kelme and that it includes silver logos, star patterns inspired by the Diamonds album, a Happy Hornet crest detail on the hem, star accents on the collar and cuffs, and the lyric Your Song embossed on the back. The kit ships with grey shorts and blue socks and is available in a special edition gift box
This departure from their traditional yellow strip is the first time in 66 years that Watford will play in blue at home—another sign of how momentous this tribute is. The last time the club donned blue was back in 1959, long before Sir Elton thought of football as more than a childhood pastime.
This gesture also highlights the enduring bond between the singer and the club. Sir Elton’s impact runs deep, from appointing Graham Taylor as manager in 1977 to overseeing the club’s meteoric rise, to becoming a beloved cultural icon among Hornets supporters. His legacy is carried on not just through this kit but in ongoing tributes and in the hearts of fans.
The upcoming game against Blackburn Rovers will be more than a fixture. For Watford fans, it will be a night of remembrance of the man whose ambition and love carried them farther than they ever dreamed. The blue kit will do more than distinguish. It will announce that this is a moment when football and music and heritage converged to honour a man who gave so much—and still remains their soul.
