Football cannot solve geopolitical problems but must carry message of peace, says Infantino

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, addressed growing pressures on the organisation to take a stand over ongoing global conflicts, especially the situation in Gaza. Speaking at a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich, he emphasised that while football is not capable of resolving geopolitical crises, it has an important role in conveying peace and unity.

He said that in a world fractured by many conflicts, football can serve as a bridge, bringing people together, making them aware of humanitarian suffering, and offering a platform for shared cultural and educational values.
Infantino also stressed that FIFA’s commitment includes using the sport’s broader influence — beyond the pitch — to promote solidarity with those affected by war and humanitarian disasters.

Regarding the controversy over whether Israel should be suspended from international football in light of the conflict in Gaza, Infantino noted that no decision has been taken so far. He said such decisions need consensus among FIFA’s confederations and careful consideration. He said FIFA must move “cautiously.”

FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani also commented that certain decisions — such as about Israel’s participation in European competitions and World Cup qualifying — fall under the jurisdiction of UEFA rather than directly under FIFA.

What this means

  • Infantino’s remarks attempt to balance between acknowledging moral and political pressure and defining a limited remit for FIFA.
  • He is recognising that football is not a solution for deep political conflicts, but asserting that it can have positive effects by promoting unity, empathy, and awareness.
  • There is also an implication that any punitive measure (like suspension of a national association) must be handled through the existing structures and with agreement, not unilaterally.

Reactions / Debate

  • Some parties, especially Palestinian officials, have called for Israel to be suspended over its actions in Gaza.
  • Human rights organisations and advocacy groups are among those urging FIFA and UEFA to act more decisively.
  • On the other side, there’s concern that strong action could politicize sport beyond what governing bodies are prepared for, and potentially divide rather than unite.
