Instead of being overwhelmed by Bayern’s attacking quality, the hosts remained compact, disciplined and aggressive when necessary. Their defensive performance ensured Bayern failed to score despite the champions increasing the pressure after the interval.
For Karius, it was also a particularly memorable afternoon. The goalkeeper, who has often been remembered for his difficult night in Liverpool’s 2018 Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid, delivered a commanding performance against one of Europe’s most powerful attacks.
