World No. 9 tennis player Andrey Rublev has officially welcomed his childhood idol, Marat Safin, to his coaching team ahead of the European clay court season. This collaboration aims to enhance Rublev’s performance and mental approach on the court.

A Long-Awaited Partnership

Rublev has long admired Safin, a former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion. The idea of working together had been on Rublev’s mind, but he was mindful of Safin’s interest in coaching. He expressed, “Deep inside, I always wanted to work together, but I knew that he was not interested. And I never wanted to put any pressure because I really care about Marat.”

The opportunity arose when Rublev learned of Safin’s openness to coaching. After discussions facilitated by Rublev’s agent, Safin agreed to join the team. Rublev recounted, “Then my agent ask, they talk and little by little we work for a couple of days together.”

Safin’s Perspective

Safin, known for his passionate playing style and on-court outbursts during his career, brings a wealth of experience to Rublev’s camp. Reflecting on his new role, Safin stated, “I can show him the road, but he needs to walk it.”

Early Days and Future Aspirations

The partnership commenced at the UTS event in Nimes, where Rublev secured a victory over Ben Shelton. Rublev acknowledged Safin’s tactical input, noting, “We had a tactic from Marat, and we were just trying to follow it.”

As they prepare for the Monte Carlo Masters, Rublev is optimistic about the collaboration’s potential. He emphasized the importance of mutual satisfaction in the partnership, stating, “I hope for really long, but it depends if he will enjoy to work with me or he will suffer.”

With Safin’s guidance, Rublev aims to refine his game and achieve greater consistency on the ATP Tour. Fans and analysts alike are keen to observe how this mentorship will influence Rublev’s performance in the forthcoming tournaments.
