Noni Madueke faces uncertain Arsenal future as European biggest sides circle

by Daniel Adeniyi

Noni Madueke is facing a crucial crossroads at Arsenal just one year after making a big-money move from Chelsea, with his diminishing role under Mikel Arteta attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The England international arrived at the Emirates Stadium with expectations of becoming an important part of Arsenal’s attacking options, but regular opportunities have proved difficult to secure. With the January transfer window approaching, Noni Madueke now finds himself on the radar of Atletico Madrid and Juventus as questions grow over his long-term future in north London.

The situation surrounding Noni Madueke has become increasingly interesting after his limited involvement during the opening stages of the campaign. According to The Telegraph, Atletico Madrid and Juventus are monitoring the 24-year-old, who remains admired for his direct approach, pace and ability to take defenders on in one-on-one situations.

Atletico Madrid have developed a reputation for valuing players capable of adding intensity and unpredictability to their attack, while Juventus are also keeping an eye on the Arsenal winger.

For Noni Madueke, the interest provides an indication that his reputation across Europe remains strong despite his struggles for consistent minutes at Arsenal.

He has made only five appearances across all competitions this season, accumulating 176 minutes and scoring once in the Carabao Cup. Those numbers underline the extent to which his role has changed since joining Arsenal.

Arsenal paid £48.5 million to sign Noni Madueke from Chelsea last summer, but the winger has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Arteta.

Since moving to north London, he has made 48 appearances across all competitions, recording nine goals and four assists. Although those numbers demonstrate that he has contributed when given opportunities, consistency has remained a problem.

Last season, Noni Madueke started 16 Premier League matches before a knee injury sidelined him for around two months. His absence disrupted his momentum, and the competition for attacking positions has become even more intense this season.

Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres are among Arsenal’s title-winning players who are yet to start a Premier League match this campaign, highlighting the difficult circumstances facing the winger.

Arteta has continued to explore different attacking combinations, while the arrival of Christos Tzolis was expected to provide another option in the forward line. Tzolis has since suffered a hamstring injury while representing Greece, although there is no clear timeline for his return.

The emergence of teenage talent Max Dowman has also increased competition for places, leaving Noni Madueke with another challenge to overcome.

England omission adds to Madueke’s concerns

The lack of regular football at Arsenal is not only affecting Noni Madueke at club level. His position with England is also becoming increasingly uncertain.

The England coaching staff reportedly regard him as one of the team’s most effective one-on-one attackers, a quality that helped him make five appearances during the summer’s World Cup. However, his limited involvement for Arsenal contributed to his omission from the latest Three Lions squad for the opening Nations League fixtures.

That development could become increasingly significant if his club situation does not improve.

Noni Madueke made his England debut under Lee Carsley in late 2024 and became part of the squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals. To remain firmly in Thomas Tuchel’s plans, however, regular club football will be crucial.

At 24, the winger still has time to rebuild his position at both Arsenal and international level, but another prolonged spell on the bench could make his situation increasingly difficult.

Could Noni Madueke leave Arsenal in January?

Arsenal’s attacking department underwent considerable change during the summer, with Leandro Trossard joining Besiktas, Gabriel Jesus moving to Barcelona and Gabriel Martinelli completing a transfer to Al Hilal.

Those departures appeared to create opportunities for Noni Madueke, but the winger has yet to take advantage of them consistently.

Instead, Arsenal’s depth and the emergence of younger players have left him competing for limited opportunities. If that situation continues into the winter, a January move could become a realistic possibility.

An approach from Atletico Madrid could be particularly intriguing if Arsenal become open to discussions. The Spanish club’s interest, alongside Juventus’ monitoring, gives Madueke potential alternatives should he decide that a change of scenery is necessary.

For now, the decision ultimately rests with Arsenal and the player. Arteta could still hand Noni Madueke a larger role as the season develops, particularly with injuries and a demanding schedule likely to test the squad’s depth.

But if his opportunities remain limited, the January transfer window could offer a fresh start.

Noni Madueke arrived at Arsenal with the ambition of establishing himself among England’s leading attacking players. With European giants now watching his situation closely, the coming months could determine whether he fights for his place at the Emirates or begins the next chapter of his career elsewhere.
