Alexander Isak scored his first goal for Liverpool and Hugo Ekitike delivered a dramatic late winner — only to be sent off shortly thereafter — as the Reds edged past Southampton 2-1 in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Anfield.

In what proved a rollercoaster evening, Isak broke his duck for the club with a composed finish in the 43rd minute. The goal came from a slick move involving Federico Chiesa, who cut the ball back into Isak’s path, and he made no mistake in slotting home. Liverpool’s new striker later admitted it was “amazing” to get his first goal in red and said he felt “good” on the night.

The matchkeeled at 1-0 until the 76th minute, when Southampton drew level. Shea Charles capitalised on a defensive error by Wataru Endo to convert from close range. The tension built through the final 15 minutes, and in the 85th, Ekitike came off the bench to fire in what looked like the winner. The assist again came from Chiesa.

However, the joy was short-lived. Ekitike, already carrying a booking, removed his shirt in celebration — prompting a second yellow and automatic dismissal. Liverpool manager Arne Slot was blunt in his reaction, calling the red card “needless and stupid.” He questioned the judgement of celebrating so recklessly under a booking, emphasizing the importance of emotional control.

The dismissal means Ekitike will miss Liverpool’s next match, a trip to Crystal Palace. Club captain Andy Robertson also weighed in, calling the actions “silly” and expressing surprise if it happens again.

Despite finishing with ten men, Liverpool managed to hold on and progress to the fourth round. The result continues their perfect start to the season, though the circumstances leave plenty of talking points.
