Tuchel says England World Cup slots open to those with character, not just fame

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has insisted that spots in his 2026 World Cup squad are not reserved and remain open to players who combine quality with strong character.

Speaking after England’s dominant win over Wales, Tuchel defended his decision to call up the same squad used in recent qualifiers, despite the absence of star names like Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and injured captain Harry Kane. He argued that selections should be earned and that no one should assume automatic inclusion.

Tuchel emphasised that competition within the squad is very much alive. He praised the smooth integration of changes in the Wales match and said the “door is always open” for players who can make a difference both on and off the pitch.

While the coach acknowledges the calibre of Bellingham and Foden, his message is clear: past reputation is no guarantee. He remains committed to a meritocratic approach, rewarding current performance, attitude, and cohesion within the team.

The current campaign has seen England win eight matches in a row under Tuchel’s stewardship, and the coach believes that building a united, character-driven squad is key to going deep in the tournament.
