Real Madrid CF captain Dani Carvajal is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee after the club’s medical team diagnosed a loose body (an intra-articular fragment) in the joint.
What we know
- After being substituted onto the pitch in the recent 2-1 victory over FC Barcelona for just 19 minutes, Carvajal underwent tests which revealed the problem.
- The club confirmed: “Following tests carried out on our captain … he has been diagnosed with a loose body in his right knee joint. Carvajal will undergo arthroscopy.”
- Early estimates suggest he could be sidelined for up to 10 weeks, which may rule him out for the rest of the calendar year 2025.
Why this matters
- At 33 years old, Carvajal has been a key defensive and leadership figure for Real Madrid for years; his absence therefore creates both a tactical and experience gap.
- This injury comes on the back of a serious knee problem last season (he ruptured two ligaments and a tendon in October 2024) which already disrupted his playing time significantly.
- For Real Madrid this adds pressure: aside from missing an established starter, they must adjust their defensive structure during a crucial phase of the season, both in La Liga and potentially in Europe.
Looking ahead
- Real coaching staff will likely be cautious in his rehabilitation given the recurrence and severity of his knee issues.
- Alternative options at right-back will need to be used more frequently; this may affect the team’s consistency and fluidity.
- If the recovery stretches beyond the estimate, it could influence Carvajal’s role for the rest of this season and his readiness for next season’s demands.
