Porto vs Man City ended with another statement performance from Erling Haaland, as the Norwegian striker scored twice to guide Manchester City to a 2-0 victory at the Estádio do Dragão and make an emphatic start to their Champions League campaign.
After a goalless first half in which Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced several outstanding saves, Haaland finally broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart before completing his brace in stoppage time. The victory also offered City a welcome European boost after their recent Champions League disappointments, having been eliminated by Real Madrid in each of the previous three seasons.
Porto vs Man City: Cagey first half for Maresca’s City
The first half suggested Manchester City might have to work extremely hard for the breakthrough.
City controlled possession and created the clearer opportunities, but Porto’s Diogo Costa stood between Enzo Maresca’s side and an early lead. The goalkeeper produced two excellent saves to deny Haaland, while also keeping out efforts from Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden.
Haaland was particularly unfortunate not to score before half-time, with his towering header and low strike both brilliantly repelled by Costa.
Porto, meanwhile, struggled to create anything meaningful.
Despite entering the contest having won all five of their domestic league matches this season, the Portuguese side failed to produce a shot during the opening 45 minutes. City’s control prevented Porto from establishing the attacking rhythm they have enjoyed domestically.
The hosts’ resistance eventually cracked shortly after the interval.
Haaland’s brace settles a tense European contest
Two minutes into the second half, Haaland finally found the breakthrough.
Enzo Fernandez delivered an excellent cross into the danger area, and the Norwegian rose to meet it before guiding his header beyond Costa and into the far corner. After being denied repeatedly in the first half, Haaland had his goal at last.
The striker’s second goal arrived deep into stoppage time, when Rayan Ait-Nouri provided the assist for Haaland to roll the ball home and complete his brace.
The double took his Manchester City Champions League tally to 36 goals in only 40 appearances, an extraordinary scoring rate that once again shows his importance to the club’s European ambitions.
Haaland had already scored the winner against Coventry in City’s previous match, meaning the striker has quickly established himself as the decisive figure in another demanding period of the season.
City teenagers shine alongside Haaland
While Haaland naturally dominated the headlines, one of the most encouraging aspects of City’s performance was the contribution of 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Making his first start for the club, the Moroccan midfielder looked completely comfortable on the Champions League stage.
Bouaddi was tidy in possession, showed confidence under pressure and worked effectively alongside Enzo Fernandez in the middle of the pitch. His performance earned him one of the highest ratings of the night and provided another indication of the depth available to Manchester City.
Fernandez was also influential, particularly with his perfectly weighted cross for Haaland’s opening goal.
At the back, Ruben Dias offered his usual composure as captain, while Matheus Nunes produced an assured display during his first start of the season.
City were not perfect, but their overall control ensured that Porto rarely looked capable of mounting a sustained comeback.
Porto struggle to threaten Donnarumma
For all of Porto’s impressive domestic form, the Portuguese champions found the step up in European competition considerably more difficult.
Francesco Farioli’s team had enjoyed a perfect start to their league campaign, but they struggled to reproduce that attacking intensity against City.
After falling behind, Alan Varela came closest to providing a response when he curled an effort narrowly wide. William Gomes also sent an attempt off target, but Porto ultimately failed to seriously test Gianluigi Donnarumma.

City’s defence remained largely untroubled, allowing the visitors to maintain control even when Porto increased the pressure late in the contest.
For Porto, the defeat also continued an unwanted European trend. The 2004 European champions have now won only two of their past 17 matches against English opposition in European competition.

The Norwegian was relatively quiet during the opening stages and found Costa in inspired form, but he remained patient and continued looking for opportunities. Once the breakthrough arrived, Porto could not contain him.
His first goal gave City the lead, while his late second ensured there would be no surprises. Haaland’s brace means Manchester City leave Portugal with confidence, momentum and a crucial away victory.
