Suns dismantle Spurs streak as Wembanyama falters

In a commanding display on Sunday night, the Phoenix Suns snapped the San Antonio Spurs’ perfect start to the season, handing them their first-loss with a 130-118 victory.

The Suns’ offence fired on all cylinders, shooting an efficient 58.2 % from the field and hitting 19 of 33 (57.6 %) from three-point range. Leading the charge, Devin Booker delivered a 28-point, 13-assist performance, while Grayson Allen added 17 points including five triples.

On the other side, the Spurs’ hopeful momentum came crashing down. Their rookie guard Dylan Harper exited in the first half with a left-calf injury, further complicating matters. Meanwhile, centre Victor Wembanyama — who had been averaging over 30 points per game — was held to just nine points on 4-of-14 shooting, with nine rebounds and six turnovers.

The Suns built a lead as large as 31 points in the third quarter, establishing control early and never letting the Spurs mount a meaningful comeback. The Spurs shot just 45.9 % overall and a weak 24.4 % from three, a stark contrast to their earlier form.

From the Spurs’ perspective, the loss represents more than just a blemish on the record — it’s a wake-up call. Wembanyama’s rare off-night exposed vulnerabilities, and the team will need to regroup swiftly if they hope to maintain the early promise of their 5-0 start.

For the Suns, the win signals a resurgence. The efficient shooting, aggressive defence and shared scoring burden suggest they are capable of challenging at a higher level than what their earlier results may have implied.

The season remains long, but the message is clear: the Suns are ready to be taken seriously, and the Spurs have been reminded that undefeated status brings extra scrutiny—and little margin for error.
