The Miami Heat could still have another major move in them after making one of the biggest splashes of the NBA offseason by acquiring former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Miami have already transformed their roster around Antetokounmpo, but questions remain over how the Heat will build an offense capable of supporting their new superstar. With the team operating under a hard cap and possessing limited flexibility, every remaining roster decision could prove crucial.

One name that continues to stand out is DeMar DeRozan. The six-time NBA All-Star has reportedly emerged as a potential target for Miami, and his ability to create his own shot could give Antetokounmpo the reliable offensive support he needs.

DeRozan remains a key NBA offseason option for Miami Heat

The Heat have been linked with several experienced players as they look to fill their final two standard roster spots. Bradley Beal, DeRozan and Klay Thompson were among the major names reportedly considered by Miami as the franchise searched for additional veteran firepower.

However, the situation has changed during the NBA offseason.

The Los Angeles Clippers have re-signed Beal, removing him from the Heat’s list of possible additions. Meanwhile, Klay Thompson appears unlikely to become an easy target, with the Dallas Mavericks reportedly not interested in buying out his contract.

Dallas instead want to use Thompson’s expiring deal to acquire something of value, potentially including second-round draft assets. Although Miami could theoretically construct a trade involving 23-year-old forward Nikola Jovic, reports suggest the Heat are not particularly eager to pursue that route.

That could leave DeRozan as one of the most intriguing options available to the franchise.

The veteran wing has built a reputation as one of the league’s most dependable self-creators. At a time when Miami are searching for a player capable of easing the pressure on Antetokounmpo, that particular skill could become extremely valuable.

The challenge is finding the right balance.

There are understandable concerns about how DeRozan would fit alongside Antetokounmpo. Neither player is primarily known for elite three-point shooting, and critics could argue that adding another mid-range-oriented scorer to a roster built around Antetokounmpo might create spacing problems.

Those concerns are valid, especially in an NBA increasingly dependent on perimeter shooting and creating open space around its biggest stars.

Yet DeRozan offers something Miami could desperately need: another player capable of taking control of an offensive possession.

Antetokounmpo is at his most dangerous when attacking the basket, using his extraordinary combination of size, athleticism and power to overwhelm opposing defenses. The problem for any team built around him is that opponents will naturally focus their defensive attention on stopping those attacks.

Without another reliable creator, defenses can pack the paint, send extra help toward Antetokounmpo and dare other players to beat them.

DeRozan could help change that equation.

His ability to create shots in isolation and manufacture scoring opportunities would force defenses to respect another major threat. Instead of every difficult possession ending with Antetokounmpo having to create something against a crowded defense, Miami could turn to DeRozan to run the offense and generate points independently.

Can Miami make the DeRozan move happen?

Still, DeRozan represents a potentially compelling solution.
