Lionel Messi paid an emotional visit to the newly renovated Camp Nou—the legendary home of FC Barcelona where he spent 21 years of his career—and expressed a heartfelt desire to one day return.
The 38-year-old Argentine star shared his sentiments via Instagram, writing: “Last night I returned to a place that I miss with all my heart. A place where I was immensely happy, where you made me feel a thousand times the happiest person in the world. I hope that one day I can return, and not just to say goodbye as a player, as I never got to do.”
Messi left Barcelona in 2021 due to the club’s financial constraints, having made 778 appearances and scored 672 goals for the club. The Camp Nou reopened recently after a major overhaul lasting 895 days and an open-training event drew tens of thousands of fans.
Barcelona have publicly welcomed Messi’s return, posting: “You’re always welcome at your home, Leo.” Meanwhile, plans are underway to hold a formal tribute in his honour once the stadium renovations are fully completed—scheduled for the 2026/27 season.
While Messi currently plays for Inter Miami CF and has extended his contract there, his comments and the club’s response have reignited hopes among Barcelona supporters that he might return—not only to bid farewell properly, but perhaps assume a new role with his long-time club.
