Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a further six-point deduction by English Football League (EFL) due to multiple breaches of payment obligations — including unpaid wages to players and staff, and missed payments to tax authorities.
What happened
- The deduction stems from failures to pay salaries on time in March, May and June 2025, as well as other overdue obligations, including to HMRC.
- This penalty comes in addition to a 12-point cut imposed on 24 October 2025 when the club entered administration — meaning Sheffield Wednesday are now on –10 points in the 2025–26 Championship.
Consequences and sanctions
- The club’s former owner, Dejphon Chansiri, has been banned from being an owner or director of any EFL club for three years.
- The EFL also confirmed the deduction is immediate, but said no further points sanctions are currently being pursued. They remain in discussion with Wednesday over existing transfer-fee restrictions.
Sporting outlook
With –10 points and deep in financial crisis, Wednesday sit rock-bottom of the Championship, far adrift of safety. The combination of administration, points deductions, and constraints on transfer activity makes their 2025–26 campaign increasingly bleak.
