Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk is free to resume his professional career after bringing his long-running doping ban case to an end through an agreement with the Football Association (FA).
The 25-year-old Ukraine international has not featured in a competitive match since November 2024 after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium while on international duty. Although he initially received a four-year suspension, the case has now been resolved, allowing him to return to football immediately after accepting a suspension equivalent to the time he had already served.
The decision marks the end of one of the most challenging chapters in Mykhailo Mudryk’s career and opens the door for his long-awaited return to Chelsea.
Doping ban case finally comes to an end
The doping ban case began after Mykhailo Mudryk returned what the FA described as an “adverse finding” during an out-of-competition drug test while representing Ukraine in October 2024.
The sample contained a low concentration of meldonium, a prohibited cardiovascular medication known for its potential to improve stamina and respiratory capacity.
Following an investigation, the Football Association charged the Chelsea winger in June 2025 before handing him the maximum four-year suspension in January 2026. Mudryk appealed the punishment to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), hoping to overturn the ruling.
Instead of continuing with lengthy legal proceedings, all parties eventually reached a case resolution agreement that brought the matter to a close.
The FA confirmed that Mykhailo Mudryk accepted responsibility for breaching anti-doping regulations while agreeing to serve only the period he had already spent suspended.
As a result, he is now eligible to return to all forms of football with immediate effect.

The Ukrainian winger described the past 20 months as the most difficult period of his professional life but maintained that he never intentionally violated anti-doping rules.
“As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance,” Mudryk said.
He also thanked everyone who stood by him throughout the lengthy process, including Chelsea and those closest to him.
“I am grateful to finally be able to return after the most difficult period of my career.”
The winger added that he was excited about beginning the next chapter of his football journey.
FA explains why the case was resolved
One of the key developments in the doping ban case involved changes made to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s technical guidance concerning meldonium.
According to the FA, Mykhailo Mudryk’s original sample showed only a low concentration of the substance.
Since then, WADA has updated its technical document regarding meldonium testing thresholds.
The FA explained that if Mudryk’s sample had been collected under today’s guidelines, the concentration detected would not have triggered an adverse analytical finding.
However, the governing body emphasized that those changes are not applied retrospectively.
Despite that, the revised guidance formed part of the context surrounding the agreement reached between the FA, Mudryk, and WADA, allowing the proceedings to conclude.
Chelsea back Mykhailo Mudryk’s return
Chelsea welcomed the outcome of the doping ban case, confirming that Mykhailo Mudryk will immediately rejoin the club’s pre-season preparations.
The Blues said they remained supportive of the player throughout the legal process while respecting the integrity of football’s anti-doping system.
“We are pleased that the matter has now reached a conclusion which allows him to return to football with immediate effect,” Chelsea said in a statement.
The club also highlighted the updated WADA testing guidance, noting that no anti-doping violation would have resulted under today’s standards.
Chelsea believe that context allows everyone involved to move forward positively.
Mudryk remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2031 after joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth an initial €70 million (£61 million).
How Mykhailo Mudryk stayed fit during suspension
Although banned from training at Chelsea’s facilities or working with club staff, Mykhailo Mudryk made significant efforts to maintain his physical condition throughout the suspension.
The winger reportedly hired private coaches and goalkeepers for individual training sessions while using facilities at non-league side Uxbridge FC.
He also organised a specialist training camp in Austria, where videos showed him working extensively on his finishing, movement and attacking drills.
Sources close to the player believe those sessions have helped him remain in strong physical condition despite nearly two years away from competitive football.
Nevertheless, they acknowledge that private training cannot fully replace the intensity of daily work with elite teammates.
