New Germany Head Coach Jürgen Klopp has named 2 different squads made up of a total of 44 players for Germany’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands, Greece and Serbia. Klopp will take charge of Germany for the first time during the forthcoming international break, and he opted for a peculiar selection for the matches over two weeks.
A group of 24 players in the first squad will be available for selection for his first game away against the Netherlands on 24 September and at home to Greece three days later. Marc-André Ter Stegen, Jamal Musiala, Nico Schlotterbeck and Kai Havertz headline this squad.
The other 20 players will join the team before the matches against Serbia on 1 October and Greece in Thessaloniki three days later. Florian Wirtz, Karim Adeyemi, Nick Woltemade, Saïd El Mala headline the second squad. Nations League rules allow this, with Klopp expected to register only a 23-man squad before each game. Klopp will use the Nations League to test his wide-player pool and integrate the squad into his playing style ahead of Euro 2028.
The German tactician highlighted the congested calendar in his decision, saying he wants to get the best out of his players and manage their workload properly. He added that they’re taking the matches very seriously.
“It’s mainly because we have to play four matches in two weeks, which is unusual for the national team. There is no A or B team. We want to win all four matches,” said Klopp at a news conference.
“I want to get to know as many players as possible. There is no A or B team. The squads are put together in a way that makes sense on the pitch and in terms of character and experience.”
There are a lot of new faces in Germany’s camp as Klopp named 16 uncapped players, and they’re all in line to make their German National Team debuts.
“We’ve got a few guys here who will surprise you, but we see something in the guys and want to be there for their development,” said Klopp of the newcomers, according to Bundesliga.com.
“Lots of talent has caught our eye — so much that some aren’t even included.”
Galatasaray and former Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané are notable absentees from Jürgen Klopp’s first selection, as is Denis Undav, who scored three goals and provided two assists at the World Cup for Germany. Undav made a series of great impressions with his impressive cameos off the bench, but unfortunately, he missed out.
Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rudiger announced their retirements from international football after Germany’s second-round exit against Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Jürgen Klopp has declared his trust in Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to take over from Neuer as Germany’s number one in the post-Nagelsmann era. Germany’s premature exit from the World Cup also prompted the departure of coach Julian Nagelsmann and the appointment of Klopp, who resigned as Red Bull’s global head of soccer and returned to a managerial role.
The German tactician started his managerial reign in Germany by threatening to quit if the media directed harsh criticism at him or stepped out of their bounds. This is another episode in the bizarre methods he has employed on the job.
