Coventry gradually grew into the contest and began finding spaces behind the City defence. Jack Rudoni came particularly close when he met a cross with a diving header at the far post, only for Donnarumma to react sharply and keep the effort out.

The Italian goalkeeper was called upon again when Loum Tchaouna sent a low effort towards goal. Donnarumma stretched to make a full-length save, before producing another important intervention against substitute Ellis Simms during the closing stages.

Those saves became increasingly significant as Coventry refused to accept defeat. City continued to threaten at the other end, but their failure to score a second goal left the result vulnerable until the final whistle.

The visitors arguably had their best opportunity to take the lead before City scored. Taiwo Awoniyi pounced on a loose pass from Semenyo and raced through on goal, but the Nigerian forward dragged his attempt wide.

It was a costly miss for Coventry, who remain without a goal in the league this season.

Much of the attention before kick-off surrounded Fernandez, who was handed his Manchester City debut following his blockbuster £125 million transfer.

The Argentina international was introduced into the starting XI just minutes before kick-off after Nico O’Reilly suffered an injury during the warm-up. Despite the late change, Fernandez settled quickly and demonstrated why City were prepared to make such a substantial investment.

The champions may have expected a more comfortable afternoon, but the 1-0 scoreline tells only part of the story. Coventry pushed them hard, yet City’s quality ultimately proved sufficient to preserve their perfect record.
