Bournemouth marked their Europa League debut in memorable fashion, beating Real Sociedad 2-1 at the Estadio Municipal de Anoeta to claim a famous victory in the first European match in the club’s history.

They almost added a third when Evanilson met Marcus Tavernier’s free-kick with a superb header, only for the ball to strike the inside of the far post before bouncing away.
Sociedad were increasingly frustrated by Bournemouth’s intensity, and the contest developed an edge as the first half progressed.

The hosts returned after the break with a completely different level of urgency.
Bournemouth had dominated the opening 45 minutes with sharp passing and aggressive pressing, but their opponents began to push them deeper as the second half progressed.
Sociedad eventually found a way back into the contest shortly before the hour mark.
Sergio Gomez delivered an inswinging cross from the right that evaded everyone inside the area before drifting into the far corner of the net.
The goal gave the home side renewed belief, while Bournemouth began to show signs of fatigue after the intensity of their first-half performance.
Sociedad continued to press for an equaliser and created several dangerous situations around the Bournemouth penalty area.
However, Petrovic repeatedly came to the visitors’ rescue.
The goalkeeper made several important saves, with his most impressive intervention arriving in stoppage time when he produced a superb reaction stop to deny Orri Oskarsson.
That save ultimately proved decisive.
Bournemouth’s defence managed to survive the late pressure and hold on for a victory that will be remembered as one of the most important nights in the club’s history.
A Europa League debut to remember for Bournemouth
The significance of the Europa League debut extends beyond the three points Bournemouth collected in Spain.
For much of the first half, the Cherries looked completely comfortable despite playing their first European match, moving the ball confidently while using their aggressive pressing to disrupt Sociedad’s rhythm.
Scott was particularly influential in midfield, while Evanilson’s movement repeatedly caused problems for the home defence and Kluivert found useful pockets of space.
The second half demanded something different.
Instead of controlling the match through possession and pressure, Bournemouth had to show resilience as Sociedad increasingly dominated the territory.
That they managed to protect their lead despite the sustained pressure will be particularly satisfying for manager Marco Rose.
The victory also means Bournemouth can approach the remainder of their European campaign with genuine confidence after proving they can compete away from home against experienced opposition.
Attention now turns to Liverpool
There will be little time for Bournemouth to celebrate before another major challenge arrives.
The Cherries return to Premier League action on Sunday when they welcome Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool, giving the club an immediate reunion with the manager who previously guided them.
The contrast between the European victory and the domestic challenge will test Bournemouth’s squad depth, particularly after the physical demands of their trip to San Sebastian.
Elsewhere in the Europa League, Crystal Palace vs Lech Poznan is another fixture that will attract attention as the competition gets under way.
