City’s fourth goal arrived somewhat unexpectedly in the 57th minute. Marc Guehi attempted to find Haaland with a pass, but the ball instead reached Semenyo, who took advantage of the unexpected opportunity and drilled a left-footed effort into the far corner.
Once again, Sunderland responded almost immediately.
Granit Xhaka produced a clever pass into the penalty area, where Nilson Angulo sent the ball across goal for Brobbey to bundle home. The goal completed the striker’s first senior hat-trick and reduced the deficit to 4-3 with more than half an hour still remaining.
The visitors continued to believe they could complete an extraordinary comeback, while City were forced to manage a match that had become increasingly uncomfortable.
Sunderland registered 4.25 expected goals during the contest, highlighting just how many opportunities they managed to create against a City defence that had conceded only twice in the league before this match.
Donnarumma also endured a difficult spell. The goalkeeper failed to claim a high ball into the penalty area, while a loose touch from Ruben Dias sent the ball back towards goal. The City captain reacted quickly to hook the ball off the line and prevent Sunderland from finding an equaliser.
Donnarumma appeared uncertain again from the long throw that followed, but City survived another dangerous moment.
Haaland finally settles the contest
With Sunderland continuing to threaten, City needed another goal to finally remove the uncertainty surrounding the result.
They found it nine minutes from time when Haaland slid in at the back post to convert Gvardiol’s cross. The goal was initially flagged for offside, but a review showed that Gvardiol had timed his run perfectly, allowing the goal to stand.
The finish ensured City could finally breathe again and gave Haaland another significant Premier League milestone.
The Norwegian has now scored against every Premier League team he has faced, adding another remarkable statistic to his already extraordinary record since arriving in England.
The victory means City enter the international break with a perfect five wins from five league matches, 13 goals scored and victories also secured in Europe and the Carabao Cup.
City top table despite defensive concerns
The result leaves City three points clear at the Premier League summit, but their performance against Sunderland also highlighted areas that will concern their coaching staff.
The hosts were far from convincing defensively, despite entering the game having conceded just two league goals. Sunderland repeatedly exposed gaps and created enough chances to make the contest much closer than the final score suggests.
At the other end, however, City’s attacking quality once again proved decisive. Fernandez’s clever free-kick, Cherki’s composed finish, Semenyo’s two goals and Haaland’s late strike demonstrated the variety available in the final third.
The result also offers an intriguing early glimpse into life after Pep Guardiola. City have continued winning under their new manager, but the Sunderland performance showed that there is still significant work to do before the team can reach the level of consistency expected of them.
