J.J. McCarthy: Why Giants’ Bold Trade Could Prove to Be a Steal

by Daniel Adeniyi

The New York Giants needed a quarterback after losing Jaxson Dart for the remainder of the 2026 season, and they wasted little time finding an answer. Their solution was a trade for J.J. McCarthy, acquiring the former Minnesota Vikings first-round pick for a 2027 fifth-round selection.

At first glance, the deal appeared to be a slight overpay. Some around the NFL reportedly expected McCarthy to be available for a sixth-round pick, making the Giants’ decision to surrender a fifth-rounder look more expensive than necessary.

But there is another way to look at the deal.

The Giants may have acquired McCarthy without necessarily sacrificing meaningful draft capital in the long run. If the quarterback performs reasonably well during his opportunity in New York, the Giants could potentially trade him next offseason and recover the fifth-round pick they gave up.

That possibility makes the move far more intriguing.

Why J.J. McCarthy Could Give the Giants Their Pick Back

According to The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones, teams around the league expected McCarthy to be moved for a sixth-round selection before the Giants stepped in with a fifth.

That suggests New York paid slightly more than the anticipated market price. However, the bigger part of the calculation is what happens after McCarthy arrives in New York.

The Giants do not necessarily need him to become their long-term starting quarter back.

Jaxson Dart remains viewed as the quarterback of the future, while Jameis Winston is under contract through 2027. That gives New York flexibility when deciding what to do with McCarthy after the season.

If McCarthy performs adequately when given an opportunity, another team could potentially become interested in acquiring him next offseason.

In that scenario, the Giants could recoup the fifth-round selection they surrendered.

Essentially, New York would have used a draft pick to acquire a quarterback for part of the 2026 season before potentially receiving a similar pick back in a subsequent trade.

That would make the original investment considerably easier to justify.

A Change of Scenery Could Help J.J. McCarthy

McCarthy’s time with the Vikings has not developed as many expected when Minnesota selected him in the first round.

The Giants are therefore taking a chance on a quarterback whose value has fallen significantly since draft night. However, the relatively modest price means New York does not need McCarthy to immediately become a franchise quarterback for the trade to work.

He simply needs to provide enough value during his opportunity.

The quarterback could benefit from a fresh environment, particularly because his time in Minnesota has been surrounded by questions about his development and long-term role.

A change of scenery does not guarantee success, but it gives McCarthy another opportunity to demonstrate why he was once regarded as a first-round prospect.

For the Giants, that opportunity carries relatively limited downside.

If McCarthy struggles badly, New York may not be able to recover the fifth-round pick. But even then, the organization will have taken a calculated gamble at a position where it suddenly needed additional depth.

The Giants Could Potentially Get More Than They Paid

The most interesting part of the deal is that the Giants’ return does not necessarily have to stop at recovering their fifth-round pick.

If McCarthy performs particularly well after arriving in New York, his trade value could increase.

That would create a scenario in which the Giants could potentially receive more draft capital than they originally surrendered.

A strong stretch of football could convince another team that McCarthy is worth taking a chance on as a potential starter or developmental quarterback. His age and former first-round status could also remain attractive factors for teams searching for an inexpensive quarterback with upside.

Of course, that scenario depends entirely on what happens on the field.

The Giants cannot assume that McCarthy’s value will rise simply because he changes teams. He will have to perform when his opportunity arrives.

Why the Trade Makes Sense for New York

The Giants’ situation makes the decision easier to understand.

Dart is expected to remain the organization’s long-term answer at quarterback, while Winston provides another veteran option. McCarthy therefore does not have to carry the franchise into the future.

Instead, he gives New York another option during a difficult season.

That distinction is important because it changes the risk calculation surrounding the trade. The Giants are not surrendering a premium draft selection or committing to McCarthy financially for several years. They are giving up a fifth-round pick for a quarterback who could potentially help them now and retain some trade value later.

If McCarthy struggles, the Giants lose a fifth-round selection.

If he plays adequately, they could potentially recover it.

If he excels, they could potentially receive even more.

That range of outcomes explains why McCarthy trade may ultimately look much better than the initial reaction suggested.

The Giants needed a quarterback, and they found one without making a major long-term commitment. Now, the value of the deal will largely depend on what McCarthy does with his opportunity.

For New York, the fifth-round pick may not be gone for good. It could simply be the price of giving J.J. McCarthy another chance to prove himself.
