Barcelona are closing in on a deal for Gabriel Jesus, with the Arsenal striker reportedly set to complete an £8.6 million move to the Spanish champions before the summer transfer window closes. The Brazil international has fallen down Mikel Arteta’s attacking pecking order, and his impending departure marks the end of an increasingly difficult spell in north London.
The transfer is understood to be at an advanced stage, with only the finer details left to resolve before Jesus travels for a medical on Monday. Napoli had also shown interest in the 29-year-old, but Barcelona have emerged as his destination as they look to strengthen their forward options ahead of the new campaign.
For Jesus, the move offers an opportunity to revive his career at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. For Arsenal, it provides a chance to collect a fee for a player whose contract expires in the summer of 2027.
Jesus to Barcelona move advances after Arsenal fall from favor
Jesus was notably absent from Arsenal’s squad for their Premier League opener against Coventry, providing another indication that his future was away from the Emirates Stadium.
Arteta had already confirmed that the striker was not training with the first team before Arsenal’s upcoming meeting with Aston Villa. When asked whether the situation meant Jesus was leaving the club, the Arsenal manager offered a brief but telling response, saying: “Personal situations, whatever they are, I think it’s clear.”
That statement has been followed by rapid developments in the transfer market.
Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022 and initially became an important part of Arteta’s plans. His movement, technical ability and willingness to operate across the forward line made him a valuable attacking option, particularly because he could play as a central striker or from either flank.
However, his importance has diminished as Arsenal have strengthened their attack.
Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres now sit ahead of him in the pecking order, leaving Jesus with increasingly limited opportunities. With his contract due to expire in 2027, Arsenal have also had to consider the financial logic of selling now rather than risking losing him for nothing next summer.
Why Barcelona want Gabriel Jesus
Barcelona’s interest in Gabriel Jesus has developed partly because their preferred pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez became increasingly difficult.
The Catalan club had been looking to add a natural centre-forward after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, but Atletico have shown little willingness to negotiate with their domestic rivals over Alvarez.
Jesus consequently became an attractive alternative.
Unlike a traditional penalty-box striker, the Brazilian offers considerable versatility. He can lead the line, move into wide areas and participate in the build-up, qualities that could fit naturally into Hansi Flick’s attacking system.
His Premier League experience also gives Barcelona a player accustomed to performing under significant pressure. During his six-season spell at Manchester City, Jesus made 236 appearances and scored 95 goals, while his Arsenal career has produced 123 appearances, 32 goals and 22 assists.
His most recent campaign was less productive, however. Jesus made 27 appearances in all competitions last season and scored six goals.
Barcelona will therefore be hoping that a change of environment can help him rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards during his best years at Manchester City.
Injury history remains Barcelona’s biggest concern
The main question surrounding Jesus to Barcelona is not his technical ability but his fitness record.
The striker has experienced significant knee problems during his Arsenal career, with an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in January 2025 keeping him out for 10 months.
That lengthy absence is particularly relevant for Barcelona because they are taking a relatively inexpensive gamble on an experienced forward. The £8.6 million fee makes the deal financially manageable, but the club will still need Jesus to remain available if he is to become a meaningful contributor.
His injury history does not necessarily eliminate Barcelona’s longer-term interest in Alvarez, either. The club could still revisit that pursuit in the future if circumstances change.
For now, however, Jesus provides Flick with another experienced attacking option without requiring Barcelona to spend the enormous fee that would likely have been necessary to prise Alvarez away from Atletico.
Arsenal prepare for another major attacking departure
Jesus is not the only Arsenal forward preparing to leave during the summer transfer window.
Gabriel Martinelli is also expected to depart, with the Brazil international set to travel to Saudi Arabia for a medical with Al-Hilal. A deal worth at least £50 million has reportedly been agreed for the winger after Arteta made clear that he was no longer central to his plans.
The departures represent a significant reshaping of Arsenal’s attacking department.
For Jesus, though, the move is about more than simply leaving Arsenal. At 29, he still has valuable years ahead of him, and joining Barcelona could provide a fresh opportunity to demonstrate that he remains capable of competing at the highest level.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are gaining a forward who understands elite competition, has experience of winning major trophies and can occupy several attacking positions.
If his medical is completed successfully and the final details are resolved, Jesus to Barcelona will become one of the more intriguing late moves of the summer transfer window.
For Arsenal, it closes another chapter in Jesus’ increasingly complicated Emirates career. For Barcelona, it could prove to be a calculated gamble capable of giving Flick exactly the versatility his attack needs.
